Handing in Your Notice… 😬
Accepting a new role is an exciting step forward, but let’s be honest – handing in your notice? That can feel like a dark cloud hovering over the whole process. ☁️
Whether your experience with your current company has been great or… not so great, resigning can be nerve-racking for all sorts of reasons. Here are some tips to help make it a little smoother:
Have your new offer in writing 📝
Before doing anything, make sure your offer letter or contract is signed, sealed, and delivered. It’s rare for things to change at this point, but having it in writing gives you peace of mind and security.
Write a formal resignation letter ✉️
Keep it short and sweet: thank them for the opportunity, state your resignation, and confirm your final working day (in line with your contract). Bring this with you to hand over after you’ve delivered the news in person (more on that below!).
Arrange a face-to-face meeting (if possible) 🤝
This can feel daunting, but it’s the best way to maintain professionalism. Your manager might have questions or feel surprised – and that’s okay. Be respectful, keep it professional, and offer to help with a smooth transition. It’s all about leaving on a positive note.
Be ready for the counteroffer conversation 💲🤔
Counteroffers are common, but before you get to this stage, ask yourself: why did you start looking for a new role in the first place? Salary bumps are tempting, but they rarely fix underlying issues – and many candidates accepting counteroffers end up job-hunting again within months. Stick to your decision with confidence.
Once your notice is in and your start date is locked, it’s time to count down to an exciting new chapter in your career. 🥳
