HIRING TIPS: JOB HOPPERS

Tuesday, December 10, 2024

But they’re a job hopper!”

Before you write someone off for moving roles frequently, pause for a moment. Context is everything.

  • Yes, they’ve held multiple positions recently – but they’re a contractor, and you’re looking for a temp. Isn’t that exactly the kind of experience you need?

  • Yes, their last three roles ended unexpectedly – but do you remember something called COVID? Redundancies were rife, and not a reflection of their capability.

  • Yes, they’ve moved around – but look closer. Each role shows progression, growth, and development. That’s not a red flag; that’s drive, adaptability and vision.

"Job hopping" isn’t always what it seems. In many cases, it shows:

The ability to hit the ground running in new environments.
A knack for learning new systems, processes and ways of working.
Strength to weather uncertainty and come out stronger.

The key is to step back and look at the bigger picture. Don’t miss the wood for the trees because of preconceived bias. It’s not about ticking boxes; it’s about finding the right person for the role.

That’s where we come in. As recruiters, it’s our job to dig deeper, uncover the full story, and help you make an informed decision. Because the best hires aren’t always the most obvious ones.

What do you think? Is it time to reframe how we see “job hoppers”?
