INTERVIEW TIPS: WHAT NOT TO DO 🙅
We’ve all heard the classics for interviews:
Firm handshake ✅
Don’t be late ✅
Eye contact ✅
But let’s dive into the “less obvious” slip-ups both sides should avoid…
🚫 Eating: Need we say more!
🚫 Taking Calls: Your phone should be off or on silent and out of sight - stay present.
🚫 Rushing the Interview: Avoid scheduling other commitments directly after your meeting; interviews need time.
🚫 Interrupting: Give each other space to finish speaking—patience makes for a better flow.
🚫 Lack of Preparation: Both sides should show up ready, informed, and engaged.
CANDIDATES
❌Oversharing: Stick to career highlights that relate to the role - no need for personal life stories.
❌Bad-Mouthing Current or Past Employers: Criticising previous workplaces reflects more on you than them.
❌Casual Hellos: “Hey, bro” is a bit too friendly for a first impression. Stick to a professional greeting.
❌Bringing Backup: Yes, this happens! Your mum, friend, or partner doesn’t need to tag along. If you need moral support they should wait in the car or in a nearby coffee shop.
❌Nicknaming the Interviewer: Stick to their name - no “Boss Man” or “Mate.”
INTERVIEWERS
❌Overly Personal Questions: Keep it professional and relevant - avoid any questions that may overstep boundaries.
❌Multitasking: Constantly checking emails or looking at your phone? It signals you’re not fully present.
❌Talking Down to Candidates: Respect goes both ways. Speak to candidates as you’d like to be spoken to.
